In many parts of the world, including here in NSW, any transgender person who wants full legal recognition in their chosen gender often can’t do this without embarking on expensive, invasive medical treatment whichsome of us may not even require or need in order to feel comfortable in our own skin. Understanding this, Amnesty International are supporting efforts to build international pressure for legal recognition of transgender people’s gender identity and protection of their rights with a campaign called Write for Rights in Norway: John Jeanette Solstad Remø

In March 2014 Norweigian Trans woman John Jeanette Solstad Remø was refused legal recognition of her gender identity. To be legally recognized John Jeanette would have to undergo psychiatric diagnosis and compulsory medical treatment, including genital reassignment surgery and sterilization. You can join the campaign to build international pressure/consensus for legal recognition of transgender people’s gender identity and protection of their rights by participating in this Write for Rights in Norway campaign here
